06.Nong Theng Ked (Sacred Pond)

Ladies and gentlemen,

Nong Theng Ked, originally known as Nong Ta Ban Ta Meuang, was later renamed as Nong Theng Ked or Nong Theng Hua during the reign of King Kham Souk (Sakkalin) in 1890. This pond is considered a sacred place, respected and revered by the Lao royal family and the people of Luang Prabang since ancient times, continuing to this day.

During the Lao New Year celebration, on the 16th of April every year, at approximately 19:00, there is a ritual where Phaya Naga (Tao Chai Chamnong) is believed to descend from Phou Si Mountain to Nong Theng Ked. The procession involves circling the sacred pond three times. After the ritual is completed, traditional dances are performed in front of Hor Pra Bang (the temple housing the sacred Buddha image) to celebrate and welcome the Lao New Year.

Next, we invite you to move toward Royal Boat House.
